What is Chiron in astrology?

Chiron is a small icy body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977. Astrologers named it after the centaur of Greek myth who taught heroes and healed others while carrying a wound he could not cure. That is why Chiron is called the “wounded healer”.

The sign Chiron was in when you were born is read as the area of life where you feel an old, tender hurt, and where the same sensitivity can become a gift for helping other people. This is astrological tradition, not science, so treat it as a prompt for reflection rather than a diagnosis.

Chiron sign by birth year

Chiron takes about 50 years to circle the zodiac, but it moves unevenly: about two years in Virgo or Libra, up to nine in Aries or Pisces. Everyone born within a few years of you shares your Chiron sign, so the house and aspects in your full birth chart matter more for what it feels like personally. The years below are approximate: near a change of sign Chiron can cross back and forth, so use the calculator for an exact answer.

Chiron in Aries

Approximate birth years: 1968–1977, 2018–2027

The wound. Self-assertion and the right to take up space. Many people with Chiron in Aries describe feeling that their anger, their drive or simply their presence was unwelcome, and carry a fear of being too much or a burden.

The gift. Courage. You can help other people stand up for themselves, because you know how hard it is to do it. You often make a good first mover for a cause or a person who needs backup.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from acting on your own behalf without waiting for permission, and from learning that anger can be clean information rather than something to hide.

Chiron in Taurus

Approximate birth years: 1926–1934, 1976–1984, 2026–2034

The wound. Worth, security and the body. A common theme is feeling you must earn your place, or never having enough, whether that is money, comfort, affection or time.

The gift. Steadiness. You can make other people feel safe and grounded, and you tend to have a real appreciation for simple pleasures that most people rush past.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from building quiet trust in yourself, and from valuing yourself for who you are rather than for what you produce or own.

Chiron in Gemini

Approximate birth years: 1933–1938, 1983–1988

The wound. Voice and being understood. This placement is often linked to feeling unheard, interrupted or dismissed, or to difficulty putting something important into words.

The gift. Communication. You can explain, translate and teach, and you often listen better than most because you know what it is like not to be heard.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from saying things imperfectly instead of waiting until they are perfect, and from listening without needing to defend yourself.

Chiron in Cancer

Approximate birth years: 1937–1941, 1988–1991

The wound. Belonging, emotional safety and family. Many people with Chiron in Cancer describe feeling that they did not get enough care growing up, or that being sensitive was a problem.

The gift. Nurturing. You can create a space where people feel safe, and your sensitivity is often a real strength in caring roles.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from giving yourself the care you needed, and from learning where your caring for others should stop so that you do not run dry.

Chiron in Leo

Approximate birth years: 1940–1943, 1991–1993

The wound. Being seen and appreciated for who you are. The fear is often that your light is too much, or not enough, and the habit is to perform or to hide.

The gift. Warmth and creative confidence. You can encourage others to take their own place, and you often bring heart to whatever you make.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from creating and playing for their own sake, and from letting yourself be seen without needing applause to feel real.

Chiron in Virgo

Approximate birth years: 1943–1945, 1993–1995

The wound. Perfectionism, self-criticism and the feeling of never being good enough. Health worries and an inner critic that never switches off are common themes.

The gift. Practical help and discernment. You notice what needs fixing and how to fix it, and you often have a real gift for craft, care and detail.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from accepting good enough, and from looking after your body with kindness rather than as a project to be improved.

Chiron in Libra

Approximate birth years: 1944–1946, 1995–1997

The wound. Relationships, fairness and being chosen. A common pattern is losing yourself in a partnership, or avoiding conflict until it costs you.

The gift. Mediation. You can see both sides, and you help other people find common ground and treat each other fairly.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from relationships between equals, and from learning that saying no honestly is part of keeping the peace, not a threat to it.

Chiron in Scorpio

Approximate birth years: 1946–1948, 1996–1999

The wound. Trust, control and vulnerability. This placement is often linked to betrayal, loss or secrecy, and to a habit of keeping people at a distance to stay safe.

The gift. Depth. You can stay with other people through hard emotions without flinching, and you understand how people change after something breaks.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from letting people in gradually and sharing what has been kept buried, at a pace you choose.

Chiron in Sagittarius

Approximate birth years: 1948–1951, 1999–2001

The wound. Meaning, belief and belonging to something larger. Some people with this placement feel out of place in the beliefs they were raised with, or disillusioned after a faith or a philosophy let them down.

The gift. Perspective. You can help people see the wider picture, and you tend to be open-minded about how others find meaning.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from forming your own truth, holding it with some humility, and being comfortable with not knowing.

Chiron in Capricorn

The wound. Achievement, authority and the sense of never measuring up. Many people with Chiron in Capricorn grew up with high expectations or little room for failure.

The gift. Grounded leadership. You can mentor, build and carry responsibility in a way that steadies other people.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from defining success for yourself, allowing rest, and learning that asking for help is not a failure.

Chiron in Aquarius

Approximate birth years: 1955–1961, 2005–2011

The wound. Belonging and being different. This placement is often linked to feeling like an outsider, or to being the odd one out in a group.

The gift. Originality. You can welcome the people who do not fit, and you often see a better way to do things before anyone else does.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from embracing what makes you different, finding your people, and connecting through feeling as well as through ideas.

Chiron in Pisces

Approximate birth years: 1960–1969, 2010–2019

The wound. Boundaries and overwhelm. A common theme is absorbing other people’s pain, or escaping into sleep, fantasy or numbing habits when things feel like too much.

The gift. Compassion and imagination. You can sense what others feel and can give it form through music, art, care or spiritual practice.

The healing path. Healing tends to come from compassion that includes limits, and from routines that keep you grounded.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Chiron stay in each sign?

Between about two years (in Virgo and Libra) and about nine years (in Aries and Pisces). Its orbit is lopsided, so it speeds up in some signs and slows down in others.

Does Chiron in a sign mean I am damaged?

No. Astrology reads Chiron as a sensitive spot and a source of empathy, not as a flaw. Plenty of people find the reading useful for reflection; none of it is a diagnosis.

Is Chiron the same for everyone my age?

Mostly. Everyone born within a few years of you has Chiron in the same sign. What differs is the house, the degree and the aspects to your other planets, which need a full birth chart.

What is the Chiron return?

Chiron comes back to its birth position at around age 50. Astrologers see it as a time to revisit old wounds and use what they taught you.
