What is a Saturn return?

Saturn takes about 29.5 years to travel once around the zodiac. Your Saturn return happens when Saturn comes back to the position it held at your birth. The first one falls between roughly age 27 and 30, the second between about 56 and 60, and a third around 86 to 90.

Astrologers connect Saturn with responsibility, structure and maturity, so the first return is traditionally seen as a coming-of-age moment: a time when many people re-examine career, relationships and where they live. That reading is tradition, not research, but plenty of people find it a useful prompt for taking stock.

How long does a Saturn return last?

Saturn moves slowly, so the exact return can span a year or more. Because Saturn goes retrograde each year, it often crosses your natal degree three times: once forward, back again, then forward for good. Some people have a single pass. The calculator lists every exact date. Many astrologers also count the months before and after, so the experience is often described as lasting two to three years.

Frequently asked questions

At what age is the first Saturn return?

Between about 27 and 30. The exact age depends on where Saturn was when you were born, because it does not move at a constant speed.

Why does my Saturn return list more than one date?

Saturn appears to move backwards for several months each year (retrograde). If that happens while it is at your natal degree, it passes that point up to three times.

Do I need my birth time or place?

No. Saturn moves less than a degree in about a week, so the dates stay accurate to within a day or so without them.

Does everybody get a second and third return?

The second return comes in the late 50s. A third return falls in the late 80s, so fewer people live to see it. The calculator shows all three dates anyway.

Is a Saturn return really difficult?

Astrological tradition calls it a challenging period of growing up. There is no scientific evidence for it, and experiences vary widely. Treat it as a reflective milestone, not a forecast.
