What is a Venus sign?
In astrology your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus occupied at the moment you were born. Venus stands for love, attraction, pleasure and what you value. Your Venus sign is said to describe how you give and receive affection and what draws you to other people.
It is a different thing from your sun sign. Venus never strays far from the Sun as seen from Earth, so your Venus sign is always within two signs of your sun sign, on either side.
Why a birth time sometimes matters
Venus spends about a month in each sign on average (longer when it goes retrograde), and it moves up to about 1.2 degrees a day. If you were born on a day when Venus crossed from one sign into the next, the answer depends on the exact time and time zone. The calculator tells you when this happens and shows both signs. Add your birth time to settle it.
Frequently asked questions
How is my Venus sign calculated?
The calculator finds the position of Venus on your birth date using an astronomical ephemeris, converts it to the ecliptic longitude measured from the March equinox (the tropical zodiac), and reads off the sign. Every 30 degrees is one sign.
Do I need my birth time?
Usually not. Venus usually stays in one sign for a month or more, so most birth dates give the same answer in every time zone. When your date is a changeover day, the calculator says so and asks for a time.
Is this the tropical or sidereal zodiac?
Tropical, which is what most Western astrology uses. Sidereal (Vedic) charts use a different reference point, so the signs they give can differ from these by about a sign.
Can Venus be in a different sign from my sun sign?
Yes, but never by more than two signs, because Venus is never more than about 48 degrees from the Sun in the sky.
Is astrology scientifically proven?
No. The position of Venus is an astronomical fact; the meanings attached to it are traditions. Use them for fun and reflection.
